CULTURE AND ART

Definition
The arts represent a way of expression of talented individuals (artists) so that other people can view, hear or experience it. Art is usually influenced by culture and it also helps to change the culture. The arts are a physical representation of the creative impulse of the artist.

Major arts include:

• performing arts – among them music, dance, and theatre;
• literature – including poetry, novels and short stories, and epics;
• culinary arts – such as baking, cooking and winemaking;
• media arts – photography and cinematography
• visual arts – including drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpting.

My favorite forms of art are music, theatre and cinema

1. Music

The most common form of art is music. Music can be presented through many different media channels, such as radio, TV, CD players, internet or concerts and it plays an important role in people’s lives. It provides aesthetic value – melody, sounds of musical instruments – and in pop songs, music also includes a form of poetry -> texts and lyrics. Music evokes a wide range of emotions and may serve as an effective way of relaxation.

Music comes in many different genres. The most common is pop-music, which we can hear from the radio stations or TV every day. However, there are also other forms of music, such as film music, jazz or classical music.

Somebody once said that there is no difference between modern and classical music. Music is only one and it’s either GOOD or BAD. And I agree with this classification.

Over the centuries, there have been many musicians and composers whose works are still enjoyed by millions of people.

2. Theatre

Theatre is a branch of performing arts. It is associated with acting out stories in front of an audience using speech, gestures, singing and other elements of performing arts. Modern Western theatre comes from ancient Greek drama and it includes performances of plays, opera, ballet and musicals.

There are several theatres in Slovakia, where people can enjoy wonderful performances of our actors and stage artists. The No. 1 stage in Slovakia is Slovak National Theater (SND) in Bratislava, which has two buildings – historical and new building of SND.

Other theaters in Slovakia are Nová Scéna (Bratislava), Divadlo Andreja Bagara (Nitra), Divadlo J.G. Tajovského (Zvolen), Štátne divadlo (Košice).

Slovakia has a lot of world-class opera singers, who are famous not only in our country, but all over the world. Some of our best opera artists are Peter Dvorský, Martin Babjak, Edita Grúberová, Adriana Kučerová or Dalibor Jenis.

3. Cinema

Cinema or film is both art and industry. It has been developed in late 19th century and it has become one of the major and most important form of art in modern world. Many films (movies) are being filmed and produced in Hollywood, California, which is considered a center of film industry. European film culture is also very rich and in my opinion, European films have, in many cases, higher artistic value than Hollywood movies.

Modern movie theaters offer excellent audio quality, refreshment (popcorn, drinks) and comfortable seats. There are many different film genres, for example comedies, action, sci-fi, drama, thrillers and horrors, just to mention a few.
