HOUSE OR FLAT? PROS AND CONS

Most of us would probably like to live in a house with large rooms, front yard and a garden with a greenhouse, where we could grow our own vegetable. Living in a lovely house close to the nature is definitely something everybody dreams of. However having a house is not that easy.

Housing estate or a timber country house. Which one would you prefer?

Houses, especially in larger cities or towns, are rather expensive and that’s why only very few people can afford to buy them. Young people who just finished their schools usually start living in apartments (flats), which they share with several other friends or roommates. Shared accommodation is a trend that has a lot of advantages.

LIVING IN A FLAT

Advantages of living in a flat or apartment (pros)
1. The main advantage is saving money, because starting salaries of young working people are usually quite low.
2. Another advantage of having roommates or flatmates is that you have someone to talk to in the evening, spend some valuable time with them and you can also help each other if needed. This, of course, applies only in situations when you have a good relationships with your roommates 🙂

Disadvantages of living in a flat or apartment (cons)
1. When people live in a shared apartment, it means that they also have to respect each other and sometimes tolerate things that they would not tolerate otherwise. Imagine, for example, that your roommate is “party animal” and every Friday or Saturday night he (or she) comes home late at night with bunch of drunk friends. In this case you need to establish rules how to live together.
2. Another disadvantage of living in a flat is that except your roommates, you also share the same building with your neighbors. Even when your roommates and flatmates are perfectly OK and you get along very well, you still may have noisy neighbors in your apartment building, who can cause you a lot of troubles.

LIVING IN A HOUSE

Advantages of living in a house (pros)
1. There are several advantages of living in a house and the most important of them is privacy. In a house you don’t hear your noisy neighbors or their dogs jumping around in an apartment right next to yours. House offers true privacy and better place for relaxation and recharging your energy after hard work.
2. Another important advantage is space. People living in flats have much less space for their stuff and activities. There is usually much more space in a house and another benefit is that every house has at least small front yard and a garden for outdoor activities.

Disadvantages of living in a house (cons)
1. However, living in a house also requires much more work in order to maintain the house and the garden. More space also means more time and money needed to keep all things around house in order.

SUMMARY
So living in a flat/apartment building or living in a house is always a trade-off. It means that you have to balance the pros and cons and decide if there are more positive things that the negative ones.
