ITINERARY OF A VISIT TO SLOVAKIA
Slovakia is a small but beautiful country in Central Europe that boasts incredible natural wonders and truly amazing historic sites. There are numerous beautiful spots and places all around our country, but there are several of them that any foreign visitor should not forget to visit.

I will talk about these must-see places later, but first of all, I would like to mention a few fact about Slovakia.
Geography of Slovakia
Slovakia is a landlocked country (does not have access to the sea) in Central Europe. It borders Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Austria and Czech Republic to the west and Hungary to the south. Slovakia is a home to approximately 5.5 million people. Most of the country is heavily forested and mountainous, especially in the central and northern parts of Slovakia. High Tatra Mountains have the tallest and most beautiful peaks, such as Kriváň, Lomnický štít and Gerlachovský štít, which is also the highest peak in Slovakia.
Brief history
In ancient times, Slovakia was the part of Great Moravian Empire. After its breakup, the territory of Slovakia was under the rule of Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918 Czechs and Slovaks formed Czechoslovakia, which lasted until 1993. After the so called Velvet Divorce, an independent Slovak republic was established.

MUST-SEE PLACES OF INTEREST IN SLOVAKIA
As many foreign tourists already know, Slovakia is a hidden treasure of Central Europe with numerous beautiful places. And some of them really stand out.
1. Ruins of Devin Castle

Magnificent Devin Castle located near the confluence of Morava and Danube rivers is a historic landmark of major importance. The origin of the castle dates back to ancient times. Over the course of history it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Situated on a massive cliff above both rivers, Devin Castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. It’s only 20 minutes driving from Bratislava city center, so the trip to Devin is a must for all visitors to our capital.
2. Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and the country’s largest city. It is located in the southwestern Slovakia and the unique fact about Bratislava is that it’s the only capital in the world that borders two other sovereign countries (Hungary and Austria). Bratislava has a population of about 500,000 people and it is a cultural and business center of Slovakia. Many international companies have their offices here, which makes Bratislava a dynamic and vibrant European city. Visitors who love history can enjoy pleasant walks in Bratislava’s Old Town, which is full of romantic streets and sidewalk cafes.
3. High Tatras

High Tatras or High Tatra Mountains is the mountain range in northern Slovakia. It’s the only mountain range with an alpine character on Slovak territory with 29 peaks over 2,500 meters. High Tatras are popular tourist destination for domestic as well as foreign visitors. Beauty of High Tatras with its pristine lakes and majestic peaks attracts hikers, skiers, rock climbers and families with children. Resorts in High Tatras offer best-in-class accommodation and excellent wellness services.
4. Bojnice Castle

Bojnice Castle is a real treasure of Slovakia and one of the most romantic castles in Europe. It was rebuilt many times, but the current look dates back to 19th century when Palffy dynasty began the major reconstruction in neo-gothic style. But the castle itself is not the only attraction that visitors can see. In the nearby park, they can also visit the oldest zoo in Slovakia and the cave, which ends right under the castle. Bojnice Castle served as a filming location for several fantasy and fairy-tale movies, such as Fantaghiro and some others.
5. Slovak Caves

There are so many beautiful caves in Slovakia that it’s really hard to pick just one that I would recommend to foreign tourists. Some of the caves are truly extraordinary, such as Dobšinská Ice Cave or Ochtinská Aragonite Cave and seeing them is an unforgettable experience. That’s why I would probably recommend visiting these two caves. However, there are also other ones, such as Damänovská Cave, Domica and Belianska Cave in High Tatras that are definitely worth seeing as well.
