GEOGRAPHY OF CANADA

Canada is situated in northern part of North American continent and includes vast territory between the North Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. By total area, Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada has the longest land border in the world – 8,893 kilometers long border with the U.S.

Physical geography of Canada is very diverse. Boreal forests prevail in northern parts of Canada, mountains and glaciers cover south-western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia and Canadian Prairies are stretching from Eastern Alberta, through Saskatchewan and Manitoba to Ontario. These four provinces are also major agricultural producers with many farms.

POPULATION
Despite being the second largest country in the world by land area, Canada is very sparsely populated and its total population is around 35,000,000 people (less than Poland, for example). According to statistics, 72% of the population is concentrated within 150 kilometers of the Canada’s southern border with the United States. Most major cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa or Winnipeg are located near the border.

ECONOMY
Canada is highly developed country with high living standard and world-class education and healthcare system. In recent decades, millions of immigrants, mostly from Asian countries, have found their new home in Canada. Immigrants are contributing to development of Canadian economy and many of them are employed in services, technology and other business sectors.

Main industries by province:
• Ontario – manufacturing and service sectors, with smaller proportion of agriculture and mining
• Alberta – exploration and extraction of fossil fuels – oil sands
• British Columbia – forestry, new technologies, film and entertainment industry
• Saskatchewan – agriculture

MAJOR CITIES
Canada is the birthplace of ice-hockey – one of the most popular teams sport in the world and many Canadian cities are famous for their hockey teams.

Toronto

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and an important economic hub of the world. It is the banking and financial center and a commercial and industrial heart of Canada. Toronto is located in Southern Ontario on the shore of Lake Ontario – one of the Great Lakes. Toronto is famous for its skyscrapers and towers, such as CN Tower, which is the tallest structure on the Western Hemisphere. Hockey team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Montreal

Montreal is the second largest city in Canada. The population of metropolitan area is more than 4 million people. French language is the official language of the city and more than 67% of people speak French at home. Second most spoken language is English (cca 16% of the population). Vancouver

Vancouver is situated on the Pacific coast of Canada and it is the third largest Canadian city with the population of approximately 2.4 million people. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities – 52% of its residents have a first language other than English.
